It opened on Boxing Day 1900 as the Camden Theatre and has been almost everything since: a cinema, a BBC radio theatre where the Goons were recorded, the Music Machine, and Camden Palace, where Madness and the Clash played and where a young Madonna made her British debut. As KOKO it kept the horseshoe of gilded balconies and the red plush, which is why bands film here.
A fire during the 2020 restoration took out the roof; the rebuild that followed added a recording studio in the old Hope and Anchor pub next door and a room under the dome, and it reopened in 2022.
