Rudolf Steiner House was built in stages between 1926 and 1937 to Montague Wheeler's design, for the Anthroposophical Society, and it is the reason to look up on the way in: curved concrete, no right angles where a corner could be avoided, a staircase that spirals like something grown rather than built. Expressionism produced very little in Britain and almost none of it in London, and the building is historically protected.
The theatre in it opened in 2022 and seats about two hundred on a rake, with the legroom and sightlines of a room designed rather than inherited. The programme is new plays and revivals pitched at the serious end - work about how people live now, and older plays chosen for the same reason.
