Founded in 1932 in Queen Mary's Gardens, and one of only two London theatres that stayed open right through the Second World War. The auditorium as it stands was built in 1974: 1,304 seats banked in the open, with the park behind the stage instead of scenery.
An eighteen-week summer season, Shakespeare at first and now musicals and new work alongside it, playing to more than 140,000 people a year. Judi Dench is its patron.
