T. S. Eliot wrote it in 1936 for Canterbury Cathedral, and the Orange Tree is staging it in a church rather than in its own room: St John the Divine, Lewis Vulliamy's Gothic Revival building of 1836, directly across Kew Road. David Suchet plays Becket and Tom Littler directs, with live choral music running through it. The play is Eliot's argument with himself about worldly and spiritual authority, and about whether a man can want martyrdom without spoiling it by wanting it. Under-30s pay £15 for any seat, and there are £1 tickets.
