Performance venues

London's stages and concert rooms: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

What is on at them this week is in What's On: Performance

Westminster Cathedral

The best Catholic choir in the country, singing the Latin repertoire daily in a vast dark Byzantine basilica.

Also in Sacred London.

The choir sings Mass and Vespers almost every day of the year, and it is the only cathedral choir in Britain that has kept the full Latin polyphonic tradition as its daily work rather than as a concert repertoire. Byrd, Palestrina and Victoria are sung in the building type and liturgy they were written for.

The interior helps enormously. Bentley's brick basilica of 1903 is still largely unfinished above the marble line, and the dark upper walls give a long, slow acoustic that suits sixteenth-century polyphony and defeats almost everything written since. Services are free to attend.
