J. F. Bentley's cathedral of 1903, in red brick and Portland stone, built in a Byzantine manner chosen so that it could never be compared with the Abbey down the road. The lower walls are a hundred kinds of marble and the mosaics have been added a chapel at a time for over a century, while the vaults above them are still bare brick - unfinished on purpose, and the more powerful for it. Eric Gill carved the Stations of the Cross.
