The Wolseley was built in 1921 as a car showroom, which is why the room is the shape it is: a double-height hall with a marble staircase, black and gold japanning, and pillars that were meant to be seen over the roofs of Wolseley motor cars. The company went under in 1926 and Barclays had it as a bank for sixty years before it became a restaurant.
Tea here is the full form - sandwiches, scones, cakes - at a price that sits well under every hotel in this category, which is the reason it is worth knowing about. It is also the only room on this list where you might reasonably turn up for something else and stay.
