The Goring opened in 1910 and has been serving afternoon tea for the whole of that time. It happens in the Veranda, which looks out over the hotel's own lawn and tree-lined borders - a private garden of a size that has no business existing this close to Victoria - and on Saturdays in the Dining Room as well, in velvet chairs under Fromental wallpaper.
Finger sandwiches, warm scones and cakes, and the current menu is built around the clothes Elizabeth II wore, each sweet dressed for the occasion and the whole thing finished with the cocktail she was fondest of. There is a mocktail in place of it, a Bollinger version of the tea, and a version with the 2014 La Grande Annee for anyone having a very good year.
They ask you to dress for it, and say so plainly: no sportswear, trainers, shorts or ripped jeans.
