Two thousand six hundred paintings covering Western European art from the 1200s to 1900, hung chronologically so that a walk from the Sainsbury Wing eastwards is six centuries in order. The early rooms hold the Wilton Diptych and Leonardo's Virgin of the Rocks, Van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait, Uccello's Battle of San Romano and Botticelli's Venus and Mars. Further in: Holbein's Ambassadors with its skull stretched across the floor, Titian, Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus, Artemisia Gentileschi's self-portrait, Rembrandt at thirty-four, Velázquez's Rokeby Venus, Van Dyck's Charles I on horseback. The British and French rooms have Gainsborough's Mr and Mrs Andrews, Stubbs's Whistlejacket at life size, Turner's Fighting Temeraire, Seurat's Bathers, Monet's water lilies and Van Gogh's Sunflowers. Free, open late on Fridays, and paintings do travel, so check before making the journey for one in particular.
