Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller painted the Austrian countryside in the 1830s with a hard, exact sunlight that got him into trouble with the Vienna academy — he insisted on working from nature rather than from the studio conventions of the day, which cost him his teaching post. A small free display, and a useful corrective to the idea that painting outdoors began in France in the 1870s.
