In the autumn of 1869 Monet and Renoir set up at La Grenouillère, a bathing place on the Seine, and painted the same scene within feet of each other. The Gallery has hung the two canvases together — one from London, one on loan — so you can stand in front of the same afternoon painted twice, by two men who were broke, sharing meals, and inventing Impressionism between them. One room, and free.
