Yinka Shonibare and Thomas Gainsborough: A Conversation

A living artist answering an eighteenth-century portrait, in the same room as it.

Art & designFree

At National Gallery.

Shonibare works with Dutch wax fabric — printed in Europe, sold in West Africa, read as African, and tangled up in empire from the start. Setting that against Gainsborough, whose sitters' money often came from the same trade routes, is the point of the pairing. Free, and the kind of hang that repays twenty minutes rather than five.
