The John Madejski Fine Rooms

The Academy's own collection, free, in the rooms most visitors walk straight past.

HistoryArt & designFree

At Royal Academy of Arts.

Burlington House keeps a suite of eighteenth-century rooms upstairs, restored and hung with works from the Royal Academy's own collection: diploma works, which every Academician has had to give the Academy on election since 1768, so the walls run from Reynolds and Gainsborough through Turner and Constable to Hockney and Emin. Free, and usually almost empty, because the queue is downstairs for whatever is ticketed.
