Artists have run this place since 1768: loan exhibitions most of the year, rooms of their own work, and the Summer Exhibition every year without a break.

George III founded the Royal Academy in 1768 and then left it to itself. It takes no money from the state, and the artists run it: up to eighty of them are Academicians, elected by the ones already in, from Joshua Reynolds and Turner in their day to David Hockney and Tracey Emin in ours. Each one has to give the Academy a work of their own on election, which is how it came to have a collection at all. The art school behind the galleries is the oldest in Britain and takes no fees from its students.
Burlington House, its home since 1868, gives most of the year to borrowed exhibitions. Then every summer since 1769, without missing one, it hangs the Summer Exhibition: anyone may enter, the judging is done without names attached, and more than a thousand works go up frame to frame from floor to ceiling, most of them for sale, an amateur's watercolour beside an Academician's. The collection includes Michelangelo's Taddei Tondo, the only marble he carved that is in this country, though the free gallery it hangs in is closed for rebuilding until 2027.
