Founded in 1984 by Ron Henocq and the Bermondsey Artists' Group, who turned a derelict park café into a gallery, and still run as an artists' organisation forty years on. It commissions artists at the point where the work is ambitious and unproven, which is why Iain Sinclair called it the best-kept arts secret in Britain and why the programme is more interesting than the postcode suggests.
Two rooms, a few minutes apart inside Southwark Park. The Lake Gallery is the original, a purpose-built white space beside the water. Dilston Gallery is a historically protected deconsecrated church in the south-west corner, and work made for that nave tends to be the thing worth crossing London for. Everything is free.
The Lake Gallery is fully step-free; Dilston's nave altar is up two steps.
