Peter McLean's bronze of 1991, put up by the Docklands corporation on the stretch of riverside the Mayflower sailed from in 1620. The boy is from the 1920s and is reading a comic — Uncle Pete and Kev's Sunbeam Weakly — whose pages carry the pilgrims' story alongside cowboys, soldiers and the Statue of Liberty; the pilgrim reads it over his shoulder, and a Staffordshire bull terrier stands up on its hind legs to see. The pilgrim's pocket has a lobster claw, a fish, a crucifix, a totem pole and an A to Z dated 1620 in it. McLean lived in Bermondsey and helped found the artists' group here.
