Carrie Reichardt has been tiling her own house since 2002, and a mosaic blue plaque on the front says so in the style of the English Heritage ones: “The Treatment Rooms. 2002 - Now. Lots of people lived here and partied hard.” Mosaicists from several countries have worked on it, a section at a time, and a final push in 2017 finished the house.
It started at the back, as a memorial. Reichardt campaigns against the death penalty and wrote for years to prisoners on death row in the United States; Luis Ramirez, her pen pal in the early 2000s, got his prisoner identity card out to her, and it is set into the back wall in resin. Other tributes to American prisoners are worked into the tiles, along with a mosaic of Hokusai's wave that she says is about the sea rising.
Reichardt's own page calls the house a public art work and asks people to come and photograph it. It is also somebody's home on a quiet residential street, and she says that too: not a museum. There is nothing to go inside, and the whole of it is on the outside anyway.
