Squares & yards
Henrietta Barnett founded the suburb in 1907 as a place where rich and poor would live in the same leafy streets, with no pubs and no shops among the houses, and Raymond Unwin laid it out; Edwin Lutyens was brought in for the centre and gave it this square on the highest ground, a classical composition of grass, brick and stone that the cottages below were never meant to rival. St Jude-on-the-Hill on the south side, begun in 1909, is his: a steep roof coming almost to the ground, a spire of 178 feet and, inside, a painted interior by Walter Starmer that took the 1920s to finish. The Free Church answers it across the square under a dome, the Institute closes the east side, and Lutyens's own houses in North and South Square frame the rest. The view from the top of Erskine Hill is the reward for the walk up.
