Terraces
Called East Street until 1937, when it was renamed after the Chiltern Hills. The building that sets its tone is the old Manchester Square fire station of 1889, Tudor Gothic in red brick with a tower built for drying hoses; it stopped being a fire station in 2005 and reopened as a hotel and restaurant in 2013. For decades the street was quiet and specialised, full of bridal wear, tailors and instrument repairers, and it has kept that shape while the tenants changed. The shops still sell one thing each, whether that is spectacles, records or coffee.
