King Street

The handsomest street on the Covent Garden estate, paved in granite setts from end to end.

Cobbled

King Street early, before Covent Garden wakes up.

Laid out with the piazza in the 1630s and rebuilt in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, running west from the market building to Garrick Street. It is wide where the streets around it are narrow, the frontages are stucco and red brick above shopfronts, and the whole roadway is granite setts rather than tarmac. On an empty morning it photographs like a film set.
