Shad Thames

A canyon of warehouses crossed overhead by the iron gangways that carried the goods across.

Lanes & alleysCobbled

The gangways over Shad Thames, kept when the wharves became flats.

The old wharves below Tower Bridge, where tea, coffee and spices came off the ships into Butler's Wharf. The warehouses either side are joined at every floor by wrought-iron bridges, so that porters could wheel goods from the riverside buildings to the storage behind without going down to the street. The docks closed, the buildings became flats and restaurants, and the gangways were kept.
