Jack Hazan's film of Hockney at the end of a love affair, made over three years and neither documentary nor fiction.

Jack Hazan spent three years around David Hockney between 1971 and 1974 while Hockney's relationship with Peter Schlesinger came apart and the painting Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) refused to finish. What he made is not a documentary: the people are themselves, playing scenes that are partly staged, and Hockney disliked it enough to try to stop it coming out.
Ossie Clark, Celia Birtwell and Henry Geldzahler are all in it, which makes it the best surviving record of that circle. The screening marks seventy-five years of Contemporary Films, the distributor, and has a conversation afterwards.
