The second London shop, opened in Sir William Tite's 1844 Royal Exchange - the building that has been a merchants' meeting place on this corner since Gresham's first one of 1571, and is now shops around a covered courtyard. Fortnum's took the Cornhill side of it.
It carries the tea, the preserves, the biscuits and the hampers rather than the whole Piccadilly range, which makes it the place to buy a present between meetings; the bar and restaurant under the glass roof of the courtyard is the other half of it. Weekdays and Saturdays only, as most of the City is.
