Swaine Adeney began making whips in 1750 and absorbed Brigg, the umbrella maker, and Herbert Johnson, the hatter. The umbrellas are still made by hand with a single-stem malacca or hickory shaft, which is what distinguishes them from every folding umbrella ever sold.
The leather is bridle hide and the cases are built to be repaired. Indiana Jones's hat came from Herbert Johnson.
