Laid out in the 1660s and given over to the gentleman's outfitting trade in the nineteenth century, it has kept an extraordinary density of specialists: shirts, shoes, hats, scent, cheese, cigars, shaving. Several of the businesses on it have been in the same trade on the same street for more than two hundred years.
The pleasure of it is that you can do the whole street in half an hour and every shopfront is a different craft. Isaac Newton lived at number 87.
