Farmers' Markets

Where the person behind the stall grew it. London's farmers' markets, most of them one morning a week: raw milk and day-boat fish, biodynamic vegetables and rare-breed meat, and two midweek markets that are really about lunch.

Parliament Hill Farmers' Market

On the edge of Hampstead Heath, with a dog park and a strong preference for plain good ingredients.

One regular's description is the best summary of it: a strong emphasis on high-quality basics rather than the elaborate, often sugary offerings of other markets. Fiveways Fruit Farm for asparagus and soft fruit, sourdough from Levain Bakery and Astons, the Potato Shop's range of varieties, Brambletye's biodynamic eggs and juice, free-range poultry from Fosse, organic meat from Galileo Farm, salad leaves from Wild Country Organics, and hot food from Mumbai Mix and Pasta E Basta.

The entrance is on the heath near the tennis courts, which makes it a natural stop before or after a walk. The dog park is, by the market's own account, the most photographed part of it.
