From 1949 to 1969 Helene Hanff, a New York scriptwriter who could not find the English classics she wanted at home, wrote to the bookseller Frank Doel at Marks & Co, sending food parcels through rationing and receiving Hazlitt, Pepys and Walton in return; the letters became the book, the play and the film with Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins. She only saw the shop after it had closed. A round brass plaque on the corner building at Cambridge Circus marks the site, and the rest of the road is still where London's booksellers are.
