Edward Stanford's shop sold the maps for the Victorian world: Livingstone, Scott and Shackleton bought here, Florence Nightingale bought her maps of the Crimea, and in The Hound of the Baskervilles Holmes sends to 'Stamford's', as Conan Doyle spelt it, for a large-scale map of the moor. It moved from Long Acre to Mercer Walk in 2019 with its stock of a hundred thousand maps, globes and guides, laid out under the big floor maps that customers walk across.
