John La Rose founded the institute in 1991 in the rooms above New Beacon Books and named it for the Trinidadian pan-Africanist; its archive holds the papers of the Caribbean Artists Movement, the Black Parents Movement, the New Cross Massacre Action Committee and the International Book Fair of Radical Black and Third World Books, with La Rose's own correspondence and the publishing records of New Beacon itself. Researchers book a desk; exhibitions and talks bring parts of it downstairs.
