Britain's first Black publisher and bookshop, founded in 1966 by John La Rose and Sarah White and still on Stroud Green Road.

La Rose and White began publishing from their front room in 1966 and opened the shop in 1973, and for half a century it has been where African, Caribbean and Black British writing could be found when nowhere else stocked it: the Caribbean Artists Movement met here, the International Book Fair of Radical Black and Third World Books was organised from here, and the shelves still carry the poetry, history and politics the big chains do not. It nearly closed in 2021 and was saved by its readers; the George Padmore Institute's archive is upstairs.
