In the East Cemetery George Eliot lies under her married name of Mary Ann Cross beside George Henry Lewes, near Douglas Adams's plain stone, where readers leave pens and the occasional towel, and the Marx tomb that draws the crowds. The West side holds Christina Rossetti in the Rossetti family plot, where Dante Gabriel had his wife Elizabeth Siddal's grave opened in 1869 to retrieve the poems he had buried with her, and Radclyffe Hall in the Circle of Lebanon, whose sunken avenue of vaults gave Victorian Gothic its scenery.
