Opened in 1833 on the model of Père Lachaise, and the fashionable place to be buried once two of George III's children chose it. William Makepeace Thackeray lies under a plain slab, Anthony Trollope near the Harrow Road wall, Wilkie Collins beneath a cross with Caroline Graves buried beside him, and Leigh Hunt, who wrote 'Abou Ben Adhem', beneath a bust. Thomas Hood and the tightrope walker Blondin are neighbours, and the catacombs under the Anglican chapel still work their hydraulic coffin lift on the Friends' tours.
