Opened in 1833 and modelled on Père Lachaise, which is exactly how it reads: Doric colonnades, Egyptian and Greek Revival mausolea, and monuments built by people who expected to be looked at. Two of George III's children are buried here, along with Brunel, Thackeray and Trollope. The Friends run tours on Sundays, including into the catacombs beneath the Anglican chapel, which are reached by a working hydraulic coffin lift.
