Philip Henslowe's Rose of 1587 was Bankside's first theatre, home to Marlowe's Tamburlaine, Doctor Faustus and The Jew of Malta, and to the young Shakespeare, whose Henry VI and Titus Andronicus were played here before the Globe existed. Its remains were found when an office block came down, saved after a public campaign led by actors, and lie under the building that replaced it, lit in outline beneath a shallow pool of water that keeps the timbers from drying out. A volunteer-run exhibition explains what is under the water.
