Free, inside the Bank on Threadneedle Street, and open on weekdays only. It covers three hundred years of a central bank — the founding of 1694 to fund a war against France, the Bank Charter Act, the vaults, and what a central bank actually does now with interest rates and inflation. The exhibit everyone comes for is the gold bar in a perspex case with a hole in it: you can get a hand in and lift it, twelve and a half kilograms, worth roughly a million pounds and going up. There is a reconstruction of the Bank's original Georgian banking hall, banknotes from the first handwritten ones to the polymer, and the forgeries that followed each of them. Monday to Friday, closed bank holidays; lates on the third Thursday of the month.
