The Royal Institution has put science in front of a paying public since 1800, and its programme is still the best place in London to hear a working scientist explain their own work: evening talks and discussions most weeks in the steeply raked theatre on Albemarle Street, where Davy, Faraday and Dewar lectured and the Christmas Lectures have been given since 1825, alongside family events and the occasional comedian with a periodic table. Faraday's laboratory is in the basement museum below, free on weekdays.
