Frederick Horniman made his money in tea and gave away what he had collected on the strength of it, and the museum he built in 1901 is still free to walk into. The World Gallery holds three thousand objects from everywhere, arranged by what people make and why rather than by continent. The Music Gallery is a wall of instruments from around the world with the sound of each one on tap, which is the sort of thing museums promise and rarely deliver. The Aquarium downstairs and the Butterfly House in the garden are ticketed; the Animal Walk, with its goats, alpacas and chickens, is not, and neither are the gardens, which run down a hillside to one of the best views of London there is. The Natural History Gallery — the walrus, the whale skeleton, the Victorian cases — is closed for refurbishment until 2027.
