Soane's own country villa of 1800, restored to his design in 2019: a house of tricks with light and coloured glass, and a gallery of contemporary art in the grounds.

John Soane bought the house in 1800, kept the wing his old master George Dance had added in 1768, pulled down the rest and built himself a small country house of ideas: a front of Portland stone with columns and caryatids taken from Roman models, a breakfast room under a shallow dome, tribunes and top-lights, mirrors and amber glass that turn daylight into something he had designed, and a fake ruin in the garden. He meant it for a dynasty of architect sons and sold it in 1810 when the sons disappointed him. Ealing bought it in 1900 for a library, the Victorians' additions came off in a three-year restoration, and it reopened in 2019 looking as it had not since Soane left, the painted ceilings and the coloured skylights back. The gallery in the grounds shows contemporary artists, and Walpole Park, laid out around the house, is Ealing's oldest.
