In the museum: five centuries of the post as the country's first social network, with a full sheet of Penny Blacks — the world's first adhesive stamp — the GPO's poster campaigns by the same designers who worked for the Underground, Victorian valentines sent anonymously because that was the point, a post bus that carried passengers as well as letters, and a mail coach game in which you fend off highwaymen and, on one recorded occasion on Salisbury Plain, a lioness. Children can send a message whizzing overhead through the pneumatic tube and dress up in the postmaster's wardrobe; Sorted! is an indoor play space for one- to eight-year-olds. Across the road, Mail Rail runs the driverless post trains that carried letters under London from 1927 to 2003.
