In Camden the night is organised around a stage rather than a dancefloor. The Roundhouse is a Victorian engine shed for turning locomotives, converted in 1964 and taking 1,700 standing. KOKO was a theatre, then a cinema, then the Camden Palace, and reopened in 2022 after a fire with the auditorium restored and a tower of small rooms behind it. The Electric Ballroom has been a dance hall since the 1930s and an Irish one for much of that. Dingwalls sits on the canal by the lock, and the Underworld is beneath the World's End at the top of the road.
What follows a show is thinner than the shows deserve. The market shuts, the pubs are busy and ordinary, and most of the crowd goes home on the Northern line.
