Opened to the public in 1889 and laid out around Clissold House, a Grade II* listed villa of the 1790s that stands in the middle of it. The two ponds are surviving stretches of the New River, the seventeenth-century channel cut to bring drinking water into London from Hertfordshire, which ran through this ground before the park existed.
There is a fallow deer enclosure, an aviary, a paddling pool, tennis courts and a bowling green, and the house holds a cafe with terrace. An 8.9 million pound Heritage Lottery restoration in 2011 put the house and the grounds back in order, and the park has held a Green Flag every year since 2006.
