Laid out in 1840 as a non-denominational burial ground and an arboretum at the same time: two and a half thousand species of tree and shrub planted in alphabetical order around the perimeter, since grown into something much closer to wild wood. The chapel at the centre is the earliest non-denominational funerary chapel in Europe; it was restored between 2021 and 2024, along with a new cafe and education space, and the park came off Historic England's At Risk register in 2024. William Booth of the Salvation Army is buried here, along with a great many nineteenth-century dissenters.
