Foster and Partners built Crossrail Place over the Elizabeth line station in the old Import Dock, and put a garden on the roof of it. The planting is the idea: specimens from the eastern and western hemispheres, arranged either side of a meridian line drawn through the garden, so you cross from one half of the world to the other halfway along.
Above it is a lattice of laminated timber with cushions of clear film between the beams, open along the middle so rain reaches the beds - the largest timber structure in the country when it was finished in 2015. The effect is a greenhouse that is not quite enclosed. Free to walk into, with shops and a cinema on the floors underneath.
