A pub designed into one of Britain's most admired council estates, and protected along with it.
Notable building
This is a pub inside a housing scheme, and the scheme is the point. John Darbourne won the competition for Lillington Gardens in 1961 and built it with Geoffrey Darke for Westminster City Council; this block, Stourhead House, went up in 1967-70. Red hand-made brick with raked joints, reinforced concrete beams and floors left exposed on the elevations, projecting balconies, maisonettes stacked three tiers deep in a scissor plan and reached along walkways broad enough to plant. It carries a higher grade of protection than almost any pub in London, and the pub is inside that protection rather than beside it.
The Pride of Pimlico takes the corner of Moreton Street, on the run where the lowest tier of two-storey maisonettes would otherwise have continued, with the publican's flat above it. Timber windows and fascias, and the same black lettering on silvered backgrounds that signs the whole estate.
Historic England is blunt that the interior has been remodelled and is of no special interest. What is worth the walk is the estate, and the fact that somebody drew the pub into it from the start rather than leaving it to find a site next door.
