A mews pub behind Belgrave Square whose 1848 licence named the trade it was for: the servants of the nobility and gentry.
Historic interior
When the licence was applied for, the Morning Advertiser of 13 March 1848 set out who the pub was meant for - "workmen and servants of the nobility and gentry". That is what a mews was: the stables and the staff quarters behind the great houses, reached from the back. The Star is still down one, off a cul-de-sac behind Belgrave Square, and finding it is half the pleasure.

A great many stories attach to the place - that the Great Train Robbery was planned in the room upstairs, that Profumo met Christine Keeler here, that Elizabeth Taylor, Bing Crosby, Peter O'Toole and Princess Margaret drank here. They are told as stories and none of them carries a source. What is on the record is the beer: it has been in every edition of the Good Beer Guide since the first, and Roger Protz brought a certificate in September 2017 to mark forty-five years of it. Four or five cask ales, usually including ESB, and a long list of whiskies.
