Notable building
Built about 1845 as an early part of Thomas Cubitt's Pimlico, designed by Thomas or by his brother Lewis, and made as one piece with the Millbank and Ponsonby Place terraces it turns the corner between. Stucco, four storeys over a basement, a channelled ground floor with a splayed corner entrance and big flat-arched bar windows under the fascia. The corner bay above is bowed and set into the wall; the second-floor windows have pediments and balconies, and a balcony runs the length of the Ponsonby Place front.
The basement is the reason to know about it. Millbank Penitentiary stood on this site from 1816, an enormous prison laid out on the Panopticon principle on soft Thames-side ground, and notorious for both. The pub's own account is that it was put up for the warders and that the cells beneath the floor are among the last physical traces of the place. Prisoners were taken from the river steps opposite to be transported to Australia, and a bollard across the road still marks the spot. The prison came down in 1890 and Tate Britain was built on the ground.
Young's have it, the cask is well kept, and the terrace faces the water.
