A 1900s gin palace named for the man who built the Crystal Palace across the road, on a site licensed since 1632.
Historic interior
Three buildings' worth of history on one corner. There have been licensed premises here since at least 1632, when the house was the Marquis of Granby's Head. It was rebuilt in 1851 and renamed for Joseph Paxton, whose Crystal Palace stood that very year in Hyde Park directly across the road. And the building you walk into is the third of them, put up in 1900-02 by G. D. Martin.
That third one is a gin palace and looks it: a central bar, etched-glass mirrors, polished woodwork and tiling.
There is a restaurant upstairs and a sports bar in the basement called the Hydeaway, with pool and table football. Drink is served from 10:00 on Sundays, which is unusual in Westminster.
