A low white pub on a bend of Rotherhithe Street, leaded windows, a dining room on the floor above and a wooden jetty built out over the Thames. From the jetty the river runs straight down to Canary Wharf.
The Mayflower took on sixty-five passengers here in 1620, from what was then the ship's home port; the pub's own account has Captain Christopher Jones mooring this far upriver to stay clear of the tax collectors below. The ship went on to Southampton and then Plymouth, and sailed on 6 September with 102 passengers and about thirty crew. Jones brought her back to Rotherhithe in May 1621, died within the year, and is buried at St Mary's across the road, where there is a statue of him in the churchyard.
Seafarers in the nineteenth century could order a pint and a postage stamp at the same counter, and the pub still holds a licence for American stamps - it says it is the only one that does, and they are sold at the bar. A Mayflower Descendants Book is kept for anyone who can trace a line back to the passengers of 1620 to sign.
