Hubert Le Sueur cast it about 1633 for Lord Weston's garden at Roehampton, the first Renaissance equestrian statue in England and still the oldest bronze statue in London. After the civil war Parliament sold it to a metalsmith to be broken up; he hid it until the Restoration, and in 1675 it was set up here facing down Whitehall towards the Banqueting House where the king had been beheaded.
A plaque beside it marks the centre of London, from which road distances to the city are measured. In 1892 a Jacobite society asked to lay wreaths on the anniversary of the execution and Gladstone's government refused; they came on 30 January 1893 regardless, police were sent, and after a confrontation they were allowed to finish. The newspapers found it funny.
