Opened on 30 June 2000 near the palace where she lived, the playground was built on the site of an earlier one funded by J. M. Barrie and takes its story from Peter Pan: a wooden galleon moored in sand, tepees, a treehouse, sculptures to find and a mermaid's fountain, all designed so children with and without disabilities play together, which was the Princess's own condition. Only adults with a child under twelve get in, so it is one of the few public spaces in London that belongs entirely to children.
